Torrential Overnight Rain Causes Chaos for Los Angeles Drivers with Severe Flooding

“Los Angeles Drivers Struggle After Heavy Overnight Rain Triggers Flooding and Collisions
In the wake of strong overnight rainfall, drivers in the Los Angeles area faced significant challenges on Friday morning due to flooded streets and freeway collisions. Boyle Heights emerged as one of the most heavily affected areas, with substantial flooding under a railroad bridge leading officials to close a section of Soto Street from Washington to Pico boulevards.
The flooding reached depths of 4 to 5 feet at one point, causing a motorist to become temporarily stranded. Although the driver managed to navigate through the flooded area eventually, opening the car door resulted in a rush of water pouring out, a situation the Fire Department deemed less than ideal.
Fortunately, both the driver and passengers remained unharmed. Despite the water receding to about 2 to 3 feet by 4 a.m., the Los Angeles Department of Transportation opted to keep the road closed until conditions improved further.
Elsewhere, the 101 Freeway near the 170 transition witnessed multiple collisions during the heaviest rainfall overnight. Emergency services responded to these incidents, transporting at least one driver to a local hospital following one of the accidents.
Regarding the weather outlook, the area of low pressure responsible for the rain has moved offshore, indicating a shift to drier conditions during Friday’s morning and afternoon hours. However, meteorologist Henry DiCarlo cautioned about the potential for pop-up thunderstorms over the saturated areas in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties, which could still pose some problems.
While the weeklong storm appears to be winding down, the unpredictability of thunderstorms remains a ‘wildcard’ factor in the region’s weather forecast.”
