Patriots Host Ex-Andover High Quarterback in Response to Malik Cunningham’s Departure

E.J. Perry, a former standout quarterback at Andover High School, made headlines by breaking a state record with an incredible 636 passing yards in a single game. Coincidentally, the Patriots faced the departure of Malik Cunningham, their quarterback who was signed by the Ravens from their practice squad. Responding to this, New England reportedly hosted Perry for a free-agent workout as he seeks a spot on an NFL roster after being waived by the Texans in August.
As reported by ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots didn’t stop there; they also brought in wide receivers Kendall Hinton (from Wake Forest) and C.J. Saunders (from Ohio State) for workouts. Hinton, much like Cunningham, transitioned from being a college quarterback to a wide receiver upon joining the NFL.
Perry, aged 25, gained prominence during his time at Andover High School, where he served as a four-year starting quarterback, accumulating an impressive 114 touchdowns for the Golden Warriors, ranking as the state’s second-highest total. Notably, he set a state record during a playoff game, throwing for 636 yards and four touchdowns in a single match against Central Catholic in his junior year.
His collegiate journey began at Boston College before transferring to Brown University, where Perry left a significant mark. In just two seasons with the Bears, he ranked high on the school’s all-time lists, including second in career total yards (7,113) and pass completions (546), and third in both career passing yards (5,981) and passing touchdowns (45).
Following a successful collegiate career, Perry garnered recognition as a two-time All-Ivy League selection and received invitations to prestigious events such as the East-West Shrine Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine. Despite being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jaguars in May 2022 and spending time with various teams including the Texans and the USFL’s Michigan Panthers, Perry is yet to make an appearance in an NFL game.
