“Firefighters Gain Ground Against Wind-Driven South Fire in Ventura County”

Firefighting crews have been actively engaged in containing a swiftly spreading wildfire, fueled by strong winds, that erupted in northern Ventura County over the weekend.
Dubbed the “South Fire,” the blaze was initially reported around 9:37 a.m. Saturday near Somis. Authorities suspect it ignited in the vicinity of a radio tower just west of South Mountain, according to fire officials.
Saturday prompted evacuation orders for several affected areas, including the Saticoy Country Club. However, as of 8 a.m. Sunday, evacuation orders were lifted for parts of Somis and a region near Mission Rock Road in Santa Paula, as confirmed by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.
Although an evacuation warning for the Saticoy Country Club area remained in place until Sunday evening at approximately 6 p.m., officials subsequently announced the lifting of this warning.
By 8:30 a.m. Sunday, the fire had consumed roughly 3,000 acres and containment stood at around 15%. Ground and aerial resources have been actively involved in combatting the blaze, with 11 hand crews, 40 engines, five bulldozers, and over 600 firefighters dedicated to the firefighting efforts, according to the Ventura County Fire Department Public Information Officer.
Ventura County Fire Department Captain Steve Kaufmann noted overnight expansion of the fire along the mountain’s periphery.
As of 4:33 p.m. on Sunday, Ventura County fire officials reported containment of the blaze at around 50%, outlining plans for continued presence in the area over the next three days to ensure complete extinguishment.
This fire occurrence coincides with Southern California’s widespread Red Flag Warning in effect until 3 p.m. Sunday. Investigations into the fire’s cause are ongoing.
