FC Barcelona Advances Its Pledge to Eradicate Violence Against Women

The organization engages in multiple initiatives to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25th.

FC Barcelona, staunchly dedicated to eradicating all forms of violence and sexist behavior against women, actively participated in the reading of the Manifesto from the World of Sport. This significant event, conducted by the General Secretary of Sport and Physical Activity from the Generalitat (Catalan regional government), featured athletes from La Masia, basketball youth teams, and Barça CBS players.

The inaugural reading of the manifesto unfolded on a momentous occasion—the women’s Clásico against Real Madrid. Barça Women made their debut at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, captivating an audience of 38,707 fans.

Leading up to the match against Real Madrid on November 19, Emma Gálvez of the women’s C team, Noa Benito from the U14C team, Elyiott Andreas from the U16B team, and Gerard Mullol from the U14A team passionately conveyed the manifesto condemning all forms of male violence against women. The manifesto advocates for a sports environment that is secure, free from violence, and built on principles of respect, safety, dignity, equality, and freedom for everyone.

This impactful initiative is set to continue on November 26 at the Palau Blaugrana before Barça’s basketball game in the Endesa League. Marc Puertas and Leo Encina, players from the basketball U16A side, along with Irene Broncano and Karla Erjavec from Barça CBS, will take the stage to read the manifesto.Furthermore, on Tuesday, November 28, during halftime of the Champions League game between Barça and FC Porto, Sidney Jose Só Delgado and Íker Rodríguez from the U16A team, alongside Emma Gálvez from the women’s C team and Noa Benito from the U14C team, will once again vocalize the manifesto, resonating its powerful message with the fans in the stadium.

FC Barcelona join the campaign “We open our eyes to male violence. Take a stand.”

FC Barcelona, with the participation of Alexia Putellas and Sergi Roberto, stands in solidarity with the Generalitat-led institutional campaign against violence towards women. The campaign, titled “We open our eyes to male violence. Take a stand,” seeks to raise awareness about the prevalence of such actions and emphasizes the importance of collective action when encountering them.

Specifically, the campaign encourages individuals to report any instances of violence through the symbolic act of ‘opening our eyes,’ symbolized by the removal of a blindfold.

Internal development ‘Equality: understand it to eradicate male violence towards women’

On November 23, a training session titled ‘Equality: Understand it to Eradicate Male Violence towards Women’ took place at the Club’s facilities. This initiative, led by Marta Macias, a lawyer and expert in public policy on gender equality, was organized by the Department of Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion.

The session aimed to create a shared space for understanding the concept of equality between men and women within organizations. It delved into a reflection on the current situation and the socialization of gender, exploring aspects such as the patriarchal system, positions of power, gender stereotypes, and differences in the use of time between genders, as well as domestic co-responsibility.

A Strong Dedication Embedded in the Club’s Statutes

In October 2021, the Club sought to embed its dedication to ending violence against women into the Club’s Statutes. Specifically, within a section of Article 4T that acknowledges the fundamental principles outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The amendment states that the Club “will uphold equal rights and the dignity of individuals” and commits to “advancing democratic principles of equality and non-discrimination.” Additionally, it pledges to “actively work towards eliminating all forms of sexist, homophobic, and racist attitudes in both society and sports.”
